SOPHIE HIRSCH

WORK

Sophie Hirsch (born 1986, Vienna) currently lives and works in Vienna.

In her hands-on research of the human body and its posture, bodily memory and emotional processes, Hirsch uncovers the robust within the fragile and vice versa. Made from a wide range of materials including silicone, fabric, metal, fascia balls and orthopaedic cushions, her sculptures draw on somatic treatment techniques as they explore the body as a manipulatable structure. Wielding the grotesque and discomfort in the same measure as beauty, Hirsch stimulates feelings of unease and intrigue through her abundant use of contrasts. In bringing together oppositional forces to create new equilibriums, Hirsch’s sculptural work rethinks strength and vulnerability as integral parts of ourselves and our systems.
