BIOGRAPHY

Laura Schawelka (*Munich) lives and works in Berlin. Her practice, which includes photography, video and installation, revolves around the use of the paradox of images. She examines different modes of representation and depiction and how they seduce and create value.

Laura Schawelka studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt in the class of Prof. Tobias Rehberger and completed her studies in 2013 with the Meisterschüler. She then completed her Master of Fine Arts at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia near Los Angeles in 2015. In 2018, she was a studio fellow of the Hessian Cultural Foundation at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris and received the Q21 viennacontemporary Eikon Artist-in-Residence Award in 2019, which enabled her to live and work in Vienna’s Museumsquartier for some time in 2020. In 2021 she received a research grant from the Berlin Senate. In 2022, she spent a month at the CCA Andratx in Mallorca as part of their residency program.
